A Step-by-Step Overview

The extraction of potato starch is a time-honored process, but at Microtec, we elevate it with our precise engineering and advanced machinery. Below is a simplified general overview of the potato starch production journey:

Potato Reception, Cleaning, and Washing

Potato starch production begins with receiving and cleaning the raw potatoes. The potatoes are carefully handled to avoid damage before undergoing initial cleaning using a rotary dry-cleaning drum. Afterward, they are destoned and washed using specialized equipment to remove dirt, stones, and other impurities. Thorough washing ensures that only clean potatoes enter the processing stage, protecting the equipment and improving the quality of the final product.

Rasping (Potato Grating)

Once cleaned, the potatoes are sent to the rasping unit, where they are grated into a fine slurry. This stage is crucial for breaking open the potato cells and releasing the starch granules. At Microtec, our advanced rasper machines ensure the most efficient release of starch with minimal fiber contamination, resulting in higher yields and improved product quality.

Slurry Separation and Desanding

The potato slurry, containing starch, protein, and fiber, is sent to a decanter for separation. In this stage, the protein-rich slurry is separated from the starch and fiber. To further protect the equipment and enhance starch purity, desanding cyclones are employed to remove any residual coarse particles, such as sand, ensuring a smooth downstream process.

Starch-Fiber Separation and Washing

Next, the starch-fiber slurry is sent through rotary screens, where centrifugal force is used to separate starch from the fiber content. Water is continuously added to wash out any remaining starch from the fibers, ensuring maximum starch recovery. The separated starch slurry is then sent to a nozzle separator to reduce water content before it enters the hydrocyclones for refining.

Starch Refining and Concentration

The crude potato starch is then refined using a multi-stage hydrocyclone system. This process ensures that impurities like residual fiber, lipids, and proteins are efficiently washed out, resulting in a high-purity starch slurry. The counter-current washing technique in the hydrocyclones minimizes water usage, making the process both sustainable and efficient. The purified starch is then concentrated for further processing.

Starch Dewatering and Drying

Once refined, the starch slurry undergoes dewatering using a vacuum filter or centrifuge to separate excess water from the starch. The starch cake is then transferred to a flash dryer, where it is rapidly dried to preserve its quality and functionality. After drying, the starch is cooled and transported to a storage silo.
