A Simplified Overview of
the Corn Starch Production Process

Corn starch is primarily produced through the wet milling method, a globally recognized and proven approach. However, at Microtec, we take it further—our process design and engineering expertise ensure optimal performance, energy efficiency, and superior product yield. Below is a streamlined description of the production process:

Corn Receiving, Cleaning, and Storage

The journey begins with receiving and cleaning raw corn. Our state-of-the-art cleaning systems remove impurities like stones, dust, and broken kernels to ensure only the best-quality corn enters the process. The clean corn is then stored in silos, ready for the wet milling process.

Steeping and CSL Recovery

Corn kernels are soaked in SO₂-treated water and lactic acid to soften them for milling. This steeping process also extracts soluble components from the corn, producing corn steep liquor (CSL), a valuable by-product. Our innovative evaporation systems concentrate CSL for reuse and integration into fiber and gluten streams, ensuring zero waste.

Germ Separation and Washing

Using advanced milling and hydrocyclone systems, the corn germ is carefully separated to prevent oil contamination of the starch. The germ is then washed to recover any residual starch, ensuring higher starch yield and purity.

Grit Milling and Fiber
Washing

Residual fibers, starch, and gluten are separated through a precision milling process. Starch and gluten are effectively extracted by thoroughly washing the fiber multiple times, maximizing recovery. The clean fiber is then dried and prepared as a valuable by-product.

Starch-Gluten Separation and Washing

Through a combination of nozzle separators and hydrocyclone systems, starch and gluten are separated. Our multi-stage starch washing system ensures unmatched purity, producing starch with minimal impurities while recycling water efficiently to reduce resource usage.

Gluten Concentration and Dewatering

Gluten extracted from the slurry undergoes concentration and dewatering through highly efficient separators and decanters. Adjustments in pH ensure optimal protein recovery. The dried gluten is processed into fine meal for storage or packaging.

By-Product Drying (Germ, Fiber, and Gluten)

The dewatered germ, fiber, and gluten are dried using advanced rotary dryers. This ensures a consistent, high-quality product that meets market demands for by-products like gluten meal, fiber feed, and germ oil.

Starch Dewatering and Drying

Refined corn starch slurry is dewatered using specially designed centrifuges and then dried using flash dryers. This method preserves the quality and functionality of the starch, producing a fine, pure powder ready for storage and packaging.
